Royal Oak Walks

We've put together three walks for you to enjoy. Some might say they are the world's greatest walking maps - starting and ending at the Royal Oak!

Please feel free to download and enjoy, or you can pick one up when you visit the pub.

This is a new idea, so please provide feedback on the walks, how we can improve and if we should create any more.

There's plenty of parking at the pub, so come down and join us, take a walk in the wonderful South Downs, finished with an ice-cold drink in the garden.

Hillfort Circular

Hillfort circular is seen as an easy route, starting at the Royal Oak pub it is a looped walk through the countryside. In late Victorian times Devil's dyke became a tourist attraction, complete with a fairground, two bandstands, an observatory and a camera obscura. During it's heydey, this area was a huge attraction for the Victorians

Devils Dyke

Devil's dyke is our medium level Royal Oak walk, which takes you to the alleged burial site of the Devil. The hills surrounding the valley rise to 217 metres and offer views of the South Downs, The Weald, and on a clear day the Isle of Wight.

Devils Dyke and Royal Oak Circular

Royal Oak Circular is our longer walk. The route takes you around the whole Devil Dyke trail allowing you to see many great british countryside views including the famous South Downs. The South Downs are formed from a thick band of chalk composed of the microscopic skeletons of plankton which lived in the sea, hence it's colour.
